ACS Safety Note: Student Safety

Now is the time to start planning for students and how they safely travel to/from home in the fall. Prior to the annual time change, Nov 7th, sunrise is at 7:39AM. This means that most high school and elementary school students will be walking or riding bicycles to school in the dark and during twilight, the most dangerous lighting conditions for accidents. We have investigated student injuries from accidents which occurred at these times.

As each school district has its own method for teaching students safety for traveling to/from school, examining the effectiveness of these programs requires analysis. Predictors in an effective safety program include police interviews, bus driver interviews, and calls from concerned citizens. Neighborhood associations are often aware of these dangers as well.

WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT STUDENT SUPPLIES’ SAFETY REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE REFLECTORS ON THE EXTERIOR OF THEIR BACKPACKS.

ACS Engineering & Safety experts can be a valuable resource to analyze and address these issues.
