7 Steps to Grouting a Pump Base

“Common Pumping Mistakes” series by Jim Elsey, Pumps & Systems

This is an excellent column on pump base grouting. On a recent project in the Houston area, ACS’ Larry Smith, PE, CMRP, was involved in a project with pumps from 10 Hp to 400 Hp. Utilizing pre-grouted fabricated steel baseplates. The pumps and drivers were removed to allow for leveling with a precision straight edge and precision levels. The initial cost was higher, but the installations went smoothly and grouting took less time. Larry says it would be interesting to see the long-term maintenance cost reduction, which is expected. Pre-grouted baseplates are not necessary for many pump installations, but are definitely worth considering for more critical and expected long life projects.
