Technology in the Fire Service

As many of us know, technology can come as a double-edged sword. The use and incorporation of a particular technology cannot reduce effectiveness particularly in life-threatening situations.

Smart technology, the use of computer-based algorithms to solve problems, is no less sensitive to judicious application. Questions that must be addressed include:

  • How reliable are the sensors being fed into the algorithms? How does the algorithm manage variable sensor degradation?
  • Does the technology’s use distract or conform to the activity?
  • What are the failure modes of the technology in multi-parameter space?
  • How well do the technologies detect missing components required to verify or annul an algorithm’s analysis?
